The Best Clean Makeup Colors for Soft Summer

Dusty rose, muted mauve and softly cool neutrals make Soft Summer makeup especially beautiful when the color whispers rather than shouts.

The Soft Summer palette — Muted, cool-neutral, gentle. See the full season

If you’re a Soft Summer, makeup tends to look best when it has the same qualities as the rest of your palette: cool to neutral-cool, muted and softly blended.

The goal isn’t to make everything pale.

It’s to avoid colors that are dramatically warmer, brighter or heavier than you are.

Think dusty rose instead of bubblegum pink. Rosewood instead of orange-red. Muted berry instead of electric fuchsia. Soft taupe instead of copper.

What to look for

For lips, look for dusty rose, mauve, rosewood, muted berry and soft plum.

For cheeks, choose muted rose, mauve-pink and cool dusty pink.

For eyes, start with taupe, mushroom, soft charcoal, muted plum and cool brown.

Avoid making “cool” synonymous with icy. Soft Summer needs softness as much as coolness.

The Good Measure rule

If the makeup enters the room before you do, it may simply have too much chroma for Soft Summer.

The most flattering shades tend to look beautifully integrated rather than dramatically separate from the face.
